Typografica exhibition

typographica spreads

My first stop was The Typographica exhibition at Kemistry Gallery. Once there I asked Alistair (from Kemistry) if he thought he could define the British design process, he didn’t immediately feel qualified to answer but kindly talked me through the galleries own very elegant printed material and typographical identity which was developed by one of the gallery partners, designer Dan from Proud Creative.

The exhibition curated by Rick Poynor  is a solid reminder of England’s elaborate and decorative history of the serif, illustration and the crafted sign. The exhibition was also very informative, well presented and a good starting point for this form of enquiry. We touched upon the subject of England being a land with Catholic roots and comparing this to the Dutch Protestants – wondered if  believing in the image of Christ (Catholic) and the word of Christ (Protestant) has shaped our graphical landscapes?
