Type design, Verdana, legibility & technology

“The typefaces you normally read have been designed to be typeset digitally and printed on paper. But as more people read more type off computer screens, they’re unfortunately reading a type designed in another era for another medium. That’s why type on screen can look pathetic (especially so-called “italics” on the Mac) and is often painful to read.” Daniel Will-Harris.

We were given the task to re-design the website of Jamie Dobson where he describes his areas of expertise  as “transformation, knowledge transfer – teaching, writing and coaching – object oriented programming and design, agile software development and lean process design, creating systems of accountability, team work, communication, and the study of systems of human beings working in team settings…”

We didn’t want his highly saturated and text rich way with the internet to be a hard read. To achieve this we had to overcome our fear of Verdana. Although we always thought of the font itself as not pretty, legibility and sensibility lead the way. Meet the good Verdana.
