Girl Geek Dinner

ARPANET (the internet’s predecessor ), nodes, a network of networks: centralized, decentralized and distributed, the Amsterdam internet exchange and finally… why was the quality of the European cup stream changeable?

These were just some of the subjects discussed at Amsterdam’s 2nd Girl Geek Dinner. The food was good, the beer was flowing and most importantly the community was enthusiastic, and the presentation educational.

OMG! Last nights speaker Elisa Jasinska demonstrated that true geeks really do struggle to explain anything in metaphors for the layman (or her Mum) – preferring to use numbers and acronyms, keeping our Mums firmly locked out of the IT bedroom. I was hoping the presentation and the evening would take a more political and critical stance on IT. “Just being a female in IT” is not enough for interesting debate. Despite this it was an interesting insight into the internet’s past and Elisa’s important role in it’s present. I will definitely be joining the community at the next event and may even offer my skills for the GGD website.

The first Girl Geek Dinner was on August 16th in 2005. Girl Geek Dinner is a non profit community.

OK. GTG…
